Certified Community for Literacy
EAGLE Award Program (Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education)
Through funding provided from the W.E.S.T. Foundation, the Workforce Development and Education Division of the Chamber is able to support a major education and personal development initiative through sponsorship of the annual Southern Region Eagle Award Delegate program. The EAGLE Award program is a reception in partnership with the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College to promote, support and enhance community literacy efforts.
Celebrating its 14th year, the Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education program recognizes and honors students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in statewide adult literacy classes.

The Awards Program is designed to create a greater awareness of the educational opportunities that are available in local communities across the state and to foster involvement in lifelong learning pursuits.

The EAGLE Awards Program has an enormous impact on the EAGLE winners and their families in a variety of ways: education, employment, increased consumer and citizenship skills, improved self-esteem and improved public speaking, increased financial worth through promotions and pay raises.

Because of the recognition activities at each level of competition, EAGLE winners and Literacy Ambassadors serve as role models for family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers encouraging all to become learners. In addition to serving as volunteers, EAGLE winners are mentors, peer tutors and recruiters of other students in local programs.
The EAGLE Award program is a vital component of the Certified Literate Community Program of Georgia (CLCP). CLCP is not necessarily a service provider but an umbrella organization that brings all sectors of a community together with all literacy providers to map out the best use of resources already available as well as how to acquire the additional resources necessary to meet local literacy needs.

This program was established as a non-profit collaborative to promote, support and enhance community literacy efforts in the Valdosta-Lowndes County region. This initiative harnesses the power of communities through a coalition that mobilizes all local resources to fight illiteracy. It is a business-education-government partnership resulting in improved literacy levels of children, families and workers ultimately resulting in a highly qualified workforce that serves as a vehicle for economic development for the entire Valdosta-Lowndes County community.
Elected officials, business leaders, business owners, Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce strive to establish a highly qualified workforce in the Valdosta-Lowndes County community by advocating for a powerful, self-managed force for literacy education. The EAGLE program is all about lifelong learning and acquiring a new skill at any point in life.
