Meet the 2015 Business Outlook Breakfast Presenters

National Outlook: Dr. Thomas Cunningham, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta

​Dr. Tom Cunningham is vice president, senior economist, and regional executive for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
Prior to his appointment as regional executive, he was associate director of research. He has served as a vice president in the research department, where he has been responsible for the regional and Latin American research teams. He has served on the Bank's Personnel, Information Technology, and Risk Management Committees and as a member of the Federal Reserve System's Information Security Group and Technology Services Council. He also was the acting director of the Bank's Center for Real Estate Analytics and the interim head of the finance group.

Dr. Cunningham joined the Bank as an economist with the macropolicy group in 1985, specializing in macroeconomics and monetary theory. He previously worked as an economics instructor at Barnard College at Columbia University.

He is a member of the American Economic Association, the Western Economic Association, and the Southern Economic Association. Dr. Cunningham has published numerous professional articles.

A native of Reedley, California, he received a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, in economics from California State University, Fresno. He earned a master's degree, a master of philosophy, and a PhD in economics from Columbia University. He has attended the executive development program at the Wharton School.

State Outlook: Dr. Jeffery Humphreys, The University of Georgia

​Dr. Humphreys is the Director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. The Selig Center is an endowed economic forecasting & market research center. Dr. Humphrey’s is a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors – the State of Georgia – and is a monthly columnist for Georgia Trend Magazine.

Dr. Humphreys has published over 250 applied and academic studies regarding market research, economic forecasting, transportation, and economic development. In Georgia, Dr. Humphreys is best known for his detailed economic forecasts, but nationally he is best known for his detailed estimates of the spending power of African-Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans, and Native Americans.

In 2003, the editors of American Demographics selected Dr. Humphreys as a “Demographic Diamond” – one of the 25 market researchers who have made the most significant contributions to the understanding of consumer trends for business leaders over the last 25 years.

The Georgia Economic Outlook, which is prepared and written by Dr. Humphreys, has twice received the Association for University Business and Economic Research’s Award for Excellence in Publications. Dr. Humphreys is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.

Local Outlook: Dr. Cynthia Tori, Valdosta State University

​Dr. Cynthia Royal Tori is a professor of economics at the Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business at Valdosta State University. Dr. Tori's primary research interests center on financial services, central banking, international trade, and returns to education. Her research has been published in several journals including the Journal of Macroeconomics, the Atlantic Economic Journal, and the International Journal of Economics and Finance. Dr. Tori is the writer and editor of the South Georgia Business Outlook, a quarterly on-line publication that discusses and forecasts the expected economic conditions for the thirty-two counties that comprise the South Georgia region.

As a member of the Center for Business and Economics Research, Dr. Tori has completed several impact studies and has worked closely with the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce on several projects including the Chamber’s IMPACT 2012 project.

Dr. Tori's greatest professional joy is working with and preparing her students for their chosen careers and expanding their understanding of the macro-economy and policy decisions. Dr. Tori received her BS in finance from the University of Florida. After four years of working in the banking industry, she entered graduate school at University Kentucky where she received her Ph.D. in economics.
