Chamber Receives Award at Arbor Day Celebration

The Valdosta Chamber of Commerce received the annual Tree Planting Award presented by the City of Valdosta’s Tree Commission last Friday during the Arbor Day Celebration at Valdosta State University.

“The Chamber received the Tree Commission’s Planting Award for their efforts during the past year to plant 100 trees in our community in recognition of the Chamber’s 100 year anniversary,” said Valdosta Tree Commission Chairman, Kevin Conrad. “The Planting Award is given each year to a business, individual, or an entity that exhibits sound urban forestry practice by planting trees.”

The Annual Arbor Day Celebration was hosted by VSU and the Valdosta Tree Commission, last Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the Palms Quad on the campus of Valdosta State University.
“This will be the second year the Valdosta Tree Commission has partnered with VSU to celebrate Arbor Day. We are very excited to have VSU as a community partner,” said Conrad.

The City of Valdosta was honored as a Tree City USA community for its 27th consecutive year. “This award further demonstrates the city’s management in the planting and maintenance of trees in Valdosta’s urban forest,” stated Conrad.
VSU was also honored as Tree Campus USA for the first time, making it one of eight Georgia Universities to have this honor.

According to, Tree Campus USA is a program that recognizes colleges and universities that “effectively manage their campus trees, develop connectivity with the community beyond campus borders to foster healthy urban forests, and also those that strive to engage their student population utilizing service learning opportunities centered on campus and community forestry efforts.”

To qualify for this recognition, colleges and universities must meet 5 standards: develop a Campus Tree Advisory Committee, have a designated Campus Tree Care Plan, organize a Campus Tree Programs with dedicated tree annual expenditures, host an Arbor Day observance, and participate in service learning projects, all of which VSU has met.
